Lectures are devised as a two year cycle and offer an overview of the historical development of Latin, covering the following topics:

1) The history of the language:
– Latin in relation to other Indo-European languages
– The periodization of Latin
– Latin script
– Latin in relation to the Romance languages
2) Phonology:
– The Proto-Indo-European phoneme inventory
– Outline of the historical phonetics of Latin
– Vowel length
– The placement of the stress and related changes
– The historical phonetics of the consonant system (individual consonants, consonant clusters)
3) Morphology:
– The morphological inventory of the Indo-European languages
– Nominal morphology
– Pronominal morphology
– Verbal morphology
4) Syntax: selected chapters intended to provide an outli-ne of the syntactic peculiarities of Latin, tackled within various theoretical frameworks, e.g.
– The syntax of the Latin noun
– The syntax of Latin impersonal verbal forms
