Asst. Prof. Dr. Renata Novak Klemenčič

Renata Novak Klemenčič studied art history at the University of Ljubljana. In 2000, she finished her master studies with a thesis on the 15th century sculptor Pietro di Martino da Milano and his work in Dubrovnik. In 2006, she presented her dissertation Architects, Stonemasons, and Sculptors of the First Half of the 15th Century in Dubrovnik (advisor Janez Höfler).

She spent several longer periods of studies and research in Italy and Austria: mostly in Florence with the scholarship of Italian government and in Vienna with the scholarship of Österreichisches Ost- und Südosteuropa-Institut; within the university cooperation agreements also in Venice (Università degli studi Ca' Foscari), Padua (Università degli studi), Split, Zagreb and Rijeka. In 2007 she was awarded a grant from the Francis Haskell Memorial Fund for her research in the archives of Naples and Dubrovnik. She conducted research in the archives of Dubrovnik, Venice, Naples, and Vienna, and studied at various research institutes and universities.

At the Department of Art History (Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana) Renata Novak Klemenčič works as a member of the research program History of Art of Slovenia, Central Europe and the Adriatic, as well as lecturer (with academic rank of assistant professor since 2008) on undergraduate and graduate courses (introductory seminars, field work) and currently advises tree doctoral students. In Ljubljana, she was principal organiser of five conferences on architectural history (in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2017) and she (co-)edited three volumes as a result of the series (published in 2011, 2014, and 2016). In 2016 she has been nominated editor-in-chief of the main art history scholarly journal in Slovenia, Zbornik za umetnostno zgodovino. Formerly, she collaborated on projects Painting and sculpture around 1400 to the north and south of the Alps: between tradition and innovation (2010-2013), National Self-Assertion Versus Transnational Scholarship: the Impact of National Discourses on the Medieval and Early Modern Art History in Slovenia (2018–2022), both financed by Slovenian Research Agency. She was also a collaborator in the international projects Garzoni. Apprentissage, Travail, Société à Venise à l’époque moderne, managed by Université Sciences Humaines et Sociales - Lille 3 (2013–2015), and Dubrovnik: Civitas et Acta Consiliorum. Visualizing Development of the Late Medieval Urban Fabric (2017), bilateral project Social, economic and cultural interaction of the Slovenian and Montenegrian littoral and mountainous regions from the late Middle Ages to the 19th century (2021–2023) and she was the leading researcher of the project The Pretorial Palace of Koper/Capodistria: Form, Meaning and Function (2020-2024). She is currently collaborating in the projects Urban morphology of Koper in the late Middle Ages and Formation of an early modern regional artistic centre: the case of Ljubljana. She actively collaborated in preparation of several European project within HERA, ADRION and HORIZON calls.

Renata Novak Klemenčič lectured at various conferences and academic institutions as guest lecturer, including universities in Rijeka, Split, Zadar, and Florence. She has published papers in Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Germany, and France. She has also been invited to participate with entries on Francesco Laurana (2005) and Pietro di Martino da Milano (2015) for Dizionario biografico degli Italiani.

Research work of Renata Novak Klemenčič is dedicated mostly to the 15th century art and architecture of Dubrovnik and the Adriatic rim, especially to the architectural and stonemasons' practice, patronage and artistic exchange within Adriatic region. Recently, her research interests also include medieval and early modern urban history.
